Church rant C&P from a comment

I gave up on the whole organized religion thing at the age of 13. My mother was due to have a second marriage that year, and I was going through confirmation classes (Protestant). however, I'd not been baptized. so the thing we were going to do was have a private baptism and then I'd get confirmed. Tada.
Well.
My mom decided NOT to marry her fiance, whom I couldn't stand (but she stayed with him for another 2 years...what?) and SUDDENLY the church was all "oh NOOO. you have to be baptized in public."
Nope. No way Kimosabe. That was not the agreement.
Then they told me it didn't matter anyway, since I'd missed too many Sundays to be confirmed. I was baffled. I saw my grandmother ever other weekend, and yes, had missed several Sundays, but there was a kid (who's aunt was married to an elder, funny that, - btw she was my ex-boss's wife) who literally NEVER came to church, but he was getting confirmed.
Calling the elders and pastor out on this bullshit, I deemed church a hypocrisy and told them I didn't want to belong to something that treated its members this way.
Aaannnddd... I remain unbaptized.

Date: 2010-04-07 09:47 pm (UTC)That sounds about right.
My stepmother is all OMG you have to get married in the Chruch! But... we aren't Catholic. We aren't even really anything other than in debt. So, no. The kicker? She didn't convert to the Catholic Church until I was thirty...
That had nothing to do with your blog. I just had to tell you that. I thought you would find the funnies in it.
ANY. WAY.
I find organized Christian religions (call me weird here) to be mostly a way for people to not have to come to grips with their own failings and shortcomings. If they can't handle their own actions, they just blanket it in "I WAS A SINNA!" and put it in God's hands. And if they want something they put it in God's hands. But if they don't get it, they don't ever think "Maybe God does not want me to have a child" or "Maybe what God is saying is get up off your lazy ass and stop eating Oreos if you want to lose weight."
No.
They just keep asking and asking because they expect God to do what they want him to do.

okay okay. Not *all* Christlings are like this. Just a general observation.

Date: 2010-04-08 05:50 am (UTC)See, I was baptized at birth, however...
Since my father was a heathen (Methodist who was divorced, my parents were married in a Methodist church, and I, who arrived a couple of years later was baptized also in said Methodist church.
Fast forward to my going to Catholic school, and for me to receive my holy sacraments, I need to be re-baptized in the Catholic church. Yadda yadda yadda, I get as far first holy communion, and that's where I stopped. We haven't really stepped foot in a church in over 20 years.
I'm curious to see if my parents ask me if we'll baptize the baby. Neither Bob nor I really see it necessary, or need to follow tradition.
I agree that the money to get the "free pass" or knowing somebody is totally ridiculous, much like tithing.

Date: 2010-04-08 06:06 am (UTC)honestly, i believe in spirituality. something that most christians seem to forget completely about. if you're gonna follow it, FOLLOW IT. understand what you're following. follow the fucking rules. don't be C&E. and if you are? own up to it. oi and vey.

Date: 2010-04-08 08:17 pm (UTC)I'm with you, the hypocrisy is what drove me from the church. I've been wary of most priests and nuns since I was still in school, just from the way the priests looked at the boys, or the nuns treated the kids in general. I had to explain to Bob that being yelled at by a Catholic Nun is JUST like being yelled at by a Marine Drill Sergeant. A Nun has the believe and conviction of GOD backing her, a Marine just has the Corps. LOL
