Remember last night how I said how much it would fucking SUCK if I couldn't use my main computer???

WELL IT FUCKING SUCKS!!!

I came out here to use it and I moved my mouse and it got STUCK on a screen saver picture. So I don't know if anyone IM'ed me or what.

So I waited about 10 minutes. NOTHING. Fine. I restart.

SYSTEM ERROR.

It's telling me it can't find the STANDARD SYSTEM FILE. Just put in the Windows OS disc.

No problem. I have that.

It's not recognizing it's in there. I restarted it with the disc in there. I turned it off, I put the disc in after turning it back on. I've done like, everything.

And the disc is readable. My gaming computer (this one) sees it just fine.

I can't get to ANY screen. ANY OF THEM. I get a Dell start up screen then the error message of doom.

HALP HALP HALP

:(
ETA

This is the error message:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Set up using the original set up CD Rom.

Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

But, uh, it never lets me get to a screen. doesn't even *start* the disc running.

:( :(

How do I run a disc in DOS? Better yet, how do I get to the fucking DOS screen? I don't fucking remember. I miss DOS. *sigh*

The *only* thing I did different last night was defrag it. And I HARDLY see how that's gonna fuck with it's world.

That probably means you have a corrupted windows registry:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q307545

You may have to re-install some drivers and software after recovering.

You can go into BIOS and tell it to boot up straight from disk. We had the same OMGWTFOVER a couple of months ago.

It is not *nearly* as pain in OHWHATTHEFUCK as it sounds. Honest.

You should be able to access your BIOS from the F2 button at start up.

I don't know what kind of motherboard you have... but you should be able to just look around in all your settings. DO NOT SAVE ANYTHING. Just look.

Until you find something called "BOOT UP". Then it will say it is booting up from hard drive "X". You should be able to change it to boot from disk. Then... if all is right and you have sacrificed enough to the unholy gods of Punch & Rum, you should be able to run Windows in repair mode. (Make sure you save this setting first.)

If'n that won't do ya-you can email me or IM me. I think the info is on my eljay profile.

Oh. And if this works and you can get it to do what it is supposed to-make sure you F2 at startup again and change it back to default settings. Or at the very least change the boot up selection back to hard drive.

Oh. When we were trying to repair Windows on our Dell it did the same exact fucking thing.

We could not get it to just repair. It wanted to reformat and reinstall. Eventaully, it just debugged itself. I thought we were going to have to take it to Dell.

Yeah. That sucks.

Howard's computer did something very similar not too long ago, and he got it fixed. I don't know how he did it, but I'll ask him when I see him tonight. Here's hoping you'll have it figured out before then.

when the computer starts up there's usually a promt for hit F2 or esc or some other button to enter setup and on the boot processes make the dvd/cd/whatever drive you have start first and it'll go straight to the OS disk instead of trying to go like normal.. .theres usually a repair action in there that should be able to fix the missing/corrupt file if not there may be more work needed. Or if that doesn't work there are ways you can save all the data (i have a nice handy lil hot swap usb kit that i can drop any drive (almost) into) and then reformat and start over but that's worst case.

I suspect a bad hard drive. I would further suspect that defragmenting reorganized some of your shit into the bad part of the hard drive. None of this is a particular problem if you have A) service or a little money for a replacement, but preferably service so you don't go through an expensive experiment and B) backups. Run the Diagnostics disc and see if the hard disk fails.

by diagnostics disc, do you mean the windows xp disc? cause i did that and it wanted to reformat my shit.
