Me:

NOM!!! the act of nomming.

*Import = Rajni, my formerly upstairs roommate from when I lived in Little India Parsippany. She was born in India, raised in Queens and moved to Parsippany. Understandably, her vernacular is shite. Although, she is terribly intelligent. Just not with the slang.

slang is a mofo. i was talking to a chinese friend and she asked me to explain some slang things, and it was tough because with so much slang, we don't even really think about the literal meaning... we just KNOW what it means.
my chinese teacher said he's still trying to explain to his taiwanese friends "junk in the trunk" and the act of "gettin' up in someone's grill".

That's like the time I said "gotcha" to a bunch of Japanese girls when I was in college. They looked confused and said, "What is 'gotcha'?" I was like, "Uhhh.... it means, like, I understand your meaning. Or I understand what you're saying."

And then they all looked at each other and kept saying, "Gotcha! Gotcha!" in their cute little Japanese accents. Hilarious!

it happens everywhere...

there's a common greeting in chinese that people understand to just mean, like, 'hi' or 'good morning,' but it literally means 'have you eaten?'
also, to say that you like to eat tofu can mean that you like to grope women against their will...
and the same words that are politely used for 'miss' can also mean hooker...

so, yeah, slang can be totally disorienting!

Import reminds me of my friend Suzana, who is originally from Bosnia. She moved here about 9 years ago. We have to explain some slang terms to her sometimes, but she is one of the msot intelligent women you'd ever meet!
