They're playing to a homophobic jury. If you're on the jury and hate homosexuals, it may seem reasonable to flip out and strike them if they try to "molest" you. In some sick way he "had it coming".

That's pretty screwed up. Awful tragedy, I hope they get the needle. Did you ever see that show "Most Evil"? If I remember, torture is pretty high up on the evilmeter. Luckily they're all idiots or they might have gone serial.

Not that surprising it's been hushed up in a small town like that, though, and I just can't believe it's being presented as a hate crime, as if that whole concept weren't bogus anyway.
